What to do in Bédoin in a week

Planning a stay in Bédoin, at the foot of Mont Ventoux? This village in the Vaucluse is one of the best bases for exploring Provence: the Giant of Provence, the Sault plateau and its lavender, the Dentelles de Montmirail, the hilltop villages, the vineyards and Vaison-la-Romaine are all within a short drive. Here is a day-by-day itinerary to make the most of a week around Mont Ventoux, to adapt to the weather, the season and your mood.

   Day 1

   Discover Bédoin

   Take time to settle in and explore the village. Wander through the narrow streets and soak up the Provençal atmosphere.

   Bédoin has several restaurants, terraces, bakeries and shops to make everyday holiday life easy. In high season, book ahead for dinner and check opening days, which can vary by period.

   Day 2

   Mont Ventoux

   Head for the Giant of Provence (1,910 m). From Bédoin, the road climbs through the forest then opens onto the famous summit landscape, with a 360° view over Provence and the Alps.

   Whether you go up by car, on foot or by bike, bring a warm layer or a windproof jacket: it is always cooler and windier at the top than at the bottom.

   The legendary climb from Bédoin is about 21 km, nearly 1,600 m of elevation gain and an average gradient of around 7.5%. It is a demanding ascent, hugely popular with cyclists from around the world.

   Check the weather before setting off, carry enough water and make sure you are well prepared: the wind and the temperature difference at the summit should not be underestimated.

   Sault & the Albion plateau

   Head to Sault along the scenic road. The plateau offers wide open landscapes and, usually from late June to mid-August (depending on the year and the weather), fields of lavender in bloom, one of the iconic images of Provence.

   Sault is also the other side to climb the Ventoux, gentler than the one from Bédoin.

   Set off to discover the villages around the Ventoux: Le Barroux and its castle, Caromb, Crillon-le-Brave or Malaucène. The Dentelles de Montmirail, these jagged limestone ridges, offer beautiful hikes and overlook the vineyards.

   Vaison-la-Romaine

   A heritage day in Vaison-la-Romaine: Roman remains, an ancient bridge and a hilltop medieval town. A dive into more than 2,000 years of history, with lovely streets and good spots for lunch.

   A day to adapt to the weather and your own pace: hiking, quiet cycling roads, swimming, or simply relaxing at home by the pool. That is the luxury of a week-long stay: taking your time.

   Market & last shopping

   Enjoying a Provençal market is a lovely way to discover local produce: olive oil, honey, cheeses and regional specialities. The Bédoin market is traditionally held on Monday morning, but check the tourist office's up-to-date information before your visit, as days and times can change with the season.
